Phonetics
IBM compatible PC with 486 or Pentium processor, software runs undr MSDOS or Windows
Speech production; measurement; articulation
Electromagnetic system for visualization of speech movement inside the mouth. The Articulograph AG100 can be used in research and for clinical application. It is comprised of a lightweight plastic helmet, small connector coils that are positioned on and in the subject's mouth, and a unit that can be connected to a PC (PC 486). Together with the accompanying software (MSDos and Windows), the procedure from set-up to measurement to data analysis is clear and allows the user to access otherwise unavailable information about tongue, mouth, palate, and jaw movements. Movement of these articulators can be tracked using 15 reference points which can be displayed in real time. These movements can be measured, graphed and stored and called up simultaneously with speech waveforms to allow for comparison. (precis of text by authors)

Speech Perception; Theories
The aim of the tutorial is to present some of the models that have been proposed during the last 40 years to account for the speech perception mechanism. The five models described were chosen on the basis of their influence in the field and illustrate different types of approach. Before presenting these models, the authors first review some of the basic properties involved in the process of speech perception that the models deal with. They then present the models and include a description of their characteristics, historical information and relevant experimental findings. A comparative table is provided. SWATWOL is a morphological parser of Swahili text.
It is based on two-level morphology, containing a morphological
dictionary and a two-level rule component for handling
morphophonological variation. The dictionary recognizes about
45,000 base forms and the permitted inflected forms. SWATWOL
contains information on part-of-speech, noun classes, etymology,
inflection and derivation. The parser has been under development
since 1985 and has now reached a phase where furher
development is very slow. Applications of SWATWOL
include Orthografix II for Kiswahili (http://www.lingsoft.fi/orthografix/),
