| The source is a copy of an anonymous translation from the Latin poem Alexandreis into Old Norse made probably around 1260. The original translation is lost. The manuscript is dated to 1280. |

| Status: The text was proofread several times against the facsimile edition and once against the manuscript. It was also compared to Finnur Jónsson's edition in the following way. The edition was scanned and with OCR transformed to a text file, which was printed and proofread against the edition. Abbreviations were reinstated and the resulting file was compared to the original transliteration. As the relation between abbreviation and expansion in FJ's edition is not one-to-one, various changes to the abbreviations in the FJ file had to be made. A second comparison between the ALW transliteration and the FJ file resulted in a list of discrepancies, all of which were checked against the manuscript. In as far as they were not due to different policies about capitals almost all turned out to be errors in the FJ edition. In 2005 Jón Helgason's own copy of the FJ edition turned up, where JH has marked errors in the edition. A part from a single accent I had already caught all of these. In a few difficult to read passages the ALW reading differs from that by FJ (who seems on the whole to follow Unger). All these were doublechecked and confirmed by Jonna Louis Jensen and Peter Springborg. The text therefore should be, apart from accidental errors caused by later manual handling of the files, as error free as humanly possible. The morphological analysis however may still contain errors either by oversight or subjective interpretation. |
